The STEM Educator of the Year competition and award is presented by Dhia: Engineering Leaders, an initiative of Texas A&M University at Qatar and Maersk Oil Qatar. Dhia supports development of Qatar’s knowledge-based economy through outreach and enrichment programs designed to inspire Qatar’s youth to select educational pathways in science, technology, engineering and math. STEM education in primary, preparatory and secondary schools is central to these efforts, and the STEM Educator of the Year award is intended to recognize outstanding educators whose work contributes to outstanding STEM education in Qatar.

Candidate Eligibility

Teachers of STEM disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in independent, private and international primary, preparatory and secondary schools in Qatar are eligible for nomation for the STEM Educator of the Year award. Nominees must have been employed by their nominating school for at least one full academic year and be currently employed by the nominating school.

Nomination Process

  1. Nomination packets should comprise the following components.
    • A one-page letter of nomination from the principal, vice principal or director of the nominee's school.
    • one-page letter of endorsement from a fellow teacher, a student or a parent of a student.
    • An essay or report by the teacher that describes a classroom or pedagogical innovation that improved students' learning.
      • The essay should highlight the teacher's approach to assessing results and effectiveness of various teaching styles and methods.
      • The essay may demonstrate evidence of professional development and the teacher's reflection on his or her own teaching techniques.
      • This essay should be 500 to 1,000 words in length.
  2. Nomination packet materials must be prepared in English only.
  3. Nomination packets must be submitted electronically as a single PDF document with contents in the order listed above. Packets submitted otherwise will not be considered.
  4. Nomination packets are due no later than 1 April 2017. Late or incomplete packets will not be considered.

Selection Criteria

Nominees will be scored by a selection committee based on the following criteria.
  • Role as a mentor who inspires success among Qatari students
  • Record and evidence of successfully implementing innovative teaching techniques that help young Qataris on educational pathways for STEM disciplines
  • Effectiveness in helping Qatari students prepare for university-level STEM programs
  • Evidence of maintaining high standards for students' understanding of STEM disciplines' core logic
  • Vision for STEM educators' role in meeting Qatar's demand for engineers and scientists
  • Service to the school and the community
  • Contributions to the pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030
